Coaches Can Learn From Watching the Basketball Plays This March
It’s NCAA tournament time and if you’re a young Basketball Coach that means it’s learning time. A great way to improve as a young coach is to pay attention to all of the different basketball plays. Imitation is the highest form of flattery for a reason. The coaches we see every year advancing in the big dance do so, because they know how to sculpt basketball plays. Coaches at any level should be like sponges. There is always something to be learned from basketball plays. Tournament time is a great time to soak up some knowledge.
If a coach is helping with a youth basketball team, they probably aren’t going to run a complex play, but every complex play has layers. Within these complex basketball plays there are a lot of moving pieces. Watching basketball plays closely allows young coaches to take parts of plays and adjust them to their needs. For example, when you’re coaching young children organization is essential. Having kids simply know where they’re going can be the difference between winning and losing. The best example is simple inbounds basketball plays. These basketball plays are often used at the end of games, in the big dance. Dissecting these basketball plays is great for young coaches.
Inbound basketball plays are perfect for teaching organization. Every player should know exactly where they are supposed to be. No matter, where your team is on the court, you should teach quality basketball plays. For example, young teams love to apply pressure through the press. Watch how coaches in the tournament beat the press for easy baskets. Having your kids know where to be will not only beat the press, but lead to untested high percentage shots. From half court having kids run to certain spots on the court will do more than confuse the defense. It will help your in-bounder. Like a quarterback who knows the route of his receivers, having the location of his or her teammates in his or her head, will make quick quality decisions possible. The more information you have prior to the pass, the quicker you can process the information as it happens. Whatever your coaching level, enjoy the quality basketballs on display this March and use them to your advantage.
